Chapter 26

Malachi

The sound of a headboard hitting the wall in a rhythmic motion echoed in the house, keeping time with the frustration that pulsed within me.

The four of us had left Niall and Nikki to talk about their issues. After Tylea and Sam had come in to drop the “you have three mates” bomb, the tension was thick.

That wasn’t how we’d planned on telling her. I still had to fully explain why I’d left. I needed her to understand I’d been forced to leave. It was never about not loving her or wanting her. Gods, more than anything I wanted to be with her—which made it all the more vexing to be listening to some other guy fuck her endlessly.

It had been going on for hours, and it felt like it would last forever.

“Seems like they solved whatever issues they had quickly enough,” I muttered, gritting my teeth when I heard another loud moan.

“It would appear so.” Adrian cracked his neck and exhaled, standing up from the couch where he’d been sitting. He walked around the room, stretching his legs.

Sam had fallen asleep with her arms crossed, leaning against some cushions. Tylea was quietly reading a book about tattoo styles, seemingly ignoring the sounds of Nikki’s screaming.

Not long after Niall and Nikki had disappeared, Courtney had arrived with notification of our next trial. There were no notes yet as to what that next assignment would entail, but seeing that we were politely given a heads up to be rested and ready to report to the council, it was safe to say we weren’t going to be ripped out of our beds in the middle of the night.

“How much longer is this going to go on?” I glanced at the clock on the wall. “We have to prepare for the trial tomorrow.”

“Yes,” Tylea said quietly, not looking up from the page she was reading. “I mentioned that already. Twice. You have pointedly ignored me.”

She set her book down, giving me an exasperated sigh.

Glancing at Adrian, he nodded slightly in confirmation. Shit. I hadn’t been paying attention to her at all.

“Sorry,” I said, scrubbing my hands over my face with more force than I meant to.

“The mating frenzy will probably last twenty-four hours,” Sam mumbled, cracking an eye open to look at the time. “We’re only ten hours in. Gonna be a bit.”

“How do you know?”

“I’m meant to protect her. I know everything about her and her animal.” Sam said. “But you’re right. Someone needs to tell them we got notification of the next trial.”

“Not it,” Tylea said quickly, shaking her head.

“Not it?” I asked.

“That’s right. I don’t know them, so I’m not volunteering to go into a mating den and risk getting shredded by whatever types of shifters they are.” She picked up her book again and opened it back up. “No, thank you. Keeping myself right here.”

I looked at Sam, and with her eyes still closed, it was like she knew. She shook her head. “I’m not going either. She’s your mate.
